Jonathan Heywood is a Risk Assessment Scientist with six years of experience in toxicology, environmental health, and exposure and risk assessment. He holds an MPH from the Colorado School of Public Health and a BS in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Nevada, Reno. His primary areas of training and expertise include risk assessment and the pharmacology and toxicology of consumer products. Jonathan’s work has assessed risks posed by exposures to asbestos, benzene, radionuclides, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), nitrosamines, food contaminants, kratom, e-cigarette aerosols, and volatiles such as methylglyoxal, diacetyl, and formaldehyde. He has advised trade groups and others on toxicology, analytical methods, and process/storage improvements for kratom products, including the relevance of alkaloid activity at opioid receptors and formation of mitragynine-specific nitrosamines. He has experience evaluating the reduced-harm utility of kratom and alternative tobacco products. In addition, he has experience providing technical support for litigation matters.
